About Us

The purpose of Somos First-Gen is to create a support system for first-generation Hispanic students by giving them a space to connect with community members and other first-gen students, as well as learn important skills and knowledge needed for college.

Our Purpose

Our Goals

Create a safe space in which people who identify as a Hispanic/Latino first-generation student can find fellowship, support, and a sense of community

To create a space where people can feel comfortable in sharing who they are: their gifts, talents, and passions

To have a space where individuals can share their success stories (ex: valuable lessons learned, resources found, information obtained, etc. in their journey thus far)

A supportive learning environment for everyone involved with the opportunity to connect and network with others

Make an environment that contributes to the development of a sense of positive identity for those participating amongst others with similar experiences

Use assets present in the group and the community to teach group members useful skills and tips for the student’s academic and professional journey

Our Start

Somos First-Gen is the product of the Neighboring Movement’s community animator network, also known as CAN. The founder of Somos First-Gen, Emily Cruz, was a part of a CAN cohort where she learned about asset-based community development and the importance of authentic and nurturing communities. As a first-generation student herself, Emily wanted to build a support system for other first-generation students. With the support of the Neighboring Movement and an amazing team, Somos First-Gen was created!

I am a first-generation graduate from Wichita State University, and am currently getting my Master’s degree in Social Work. Some of my hobbies include drinking coffee, watching movies, and painting! A gift of mine is that I am good at baking!

I began organizing Somos First-Gen because I want to create a group that helps discover and connect gifts in the community. The purpose of this is to create an amazing support for first-gen students. As a first-gen student myself, I know how important a support system is when trying to navigate higher education. I hope that Somos First-Gen can be that support system to many!

I am a college graduate from Wichita state University. I received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 2022. I am a 3rd grade teacher at a K-8th grade bilingual school. Some of my hobbies include watching movies, painting, and trying new restaurants! I also enjoy spending time with family and friends. A gift of mine is being able to do arts and crafts and decorating for events with my mom.

The reason I joined Somos First-Gen is because I am a first-generation student myself. I know how difficult and intimidating it can be to ask for help. My goal for Somos First-Gen is to use my gained knowledge and experiences in a way that will help others.

I believe Somos First-Gen is a great resource for students. I understand how important one person can be in making a difference! Had I not had help, I likely would not have attended college. I am a college graduate of Wichita State University. I received my bachelor’s degree in social work in May of 2023. Soon, I will be working towards my masters degree. My hobbies are traveling, singing, watching movies and trying out different coffee shops. A gift of mine is making people laugh and helping others.

As a first generation student, and the first one in my family to receive a bachelor’s degree, I know how challenging it is to navigate the world of pursuing a higher education. Being a part of Somos First-Gen means I can help others pursue their dreams and let them know que si se puede!

Currently, I am a senior at North High School in Wichita. I am interested in studying law and business. My focus is to become an immigration attorney to help immigrants and their families. Some things I love are: learning new things, helping out, cooking/baking, and listening to music.

Being first generation myself, it is challenging to find someone who can give you help and support. Somos First-Gen is an amazing group of people who offer support and information about the college experience. I am glad to be a part of this group to help other students.
